Descrição
For many years the software industry has debated open source Java. The debate still rages on within many online forums. Most of this debate focuses on convincing Sun Microsystems to release their Java implementation with an open source license. As many advocate, the time has come to drop the debate and get to work.
This session will provide an overview of the various open source implementations of the Java standard. In addition, this session will describe the obstacles these efforts face.
What is the state of an open source Java?
By examining the goals and status of the various open source Java projects (Kaffe, Classpath, GCJ, SableVM, Jikes), we can form a better perspective of the viabliity of these implementations and more effectively advocate their growth.
What stands between these projects and wide spread adoption?
With a clear understanding of these projects, we can then examine the obstacles these projects face and offer suggestions to one of the most troubling questions. How can the Java community support an open source implementation and compatibility?
What alternatives are there to the Sun JDK?
Finally, this session will introduce the SNAP Platform. The SNAP Platform is the only integrated distribution of a completely open source Java-like evelopment Kit. By packaging together SableVM, Jikes, and GNU CLASSPATH along with Eclipse, Tomcat, and SwingWT, the SNAP Platform offers a complete Java-based software development stack built upon an open source Sun JDK replacement.
