Is FLOSS a competitive advantage or a step forward for mankind? Often we see and rationalise FLOSS as a competitive advantage, however FLOSS is really changing the world more deeply through its philosophies and values, which we often largely take for granted within the community. How can we take that message to non-technical communities? How can we use our secret super powers for a better world? Come along to find out practical approaches to taking FLOSS outside the box and case studies of using our powers for good.

Pia Waugh

Pia Waugh is the Vice-President and previous President of Linux Australia. She is also on the Software Freedom Initiative board, and active in many FOSS organisations including Linux International, the IOSN and of course her local LUG the Sydney Linux User Group. She organises many FOSS community events including the coordination of the Australia Software Freedom Day activities (15 teams in one day!), forums, relations with other national and international organisations, and more.

Pia works by day both on a research project investigating the use of FOSS in research and education, as well as consulting to Government and corporate on their Open Source strategies. She also works closely with the Open Source business community providing support and training to help grow the Open Source industry in Australia.

Pia believes in freedom for everyone, and equal access to opportunity, and sees FOSS as the ultimate way to get there.
