The Active Block I/O Scheduling System (ABISS) is an extension of the storage subsystem of Linux. It is designed to provide guaranteed reading and writing bit rates to applications, with minimal overhead and low latency. Various components of ABISS as well as their actual implementation are described. This includes work on the Linux elevator and support for delayed allocation.

Giel de Nijs, employed at Philips Research in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is working on the real-time harddrive scheduling system ABISS (http://abiss.sourceforge.net) in cooperation with Werner Almesberger, home and mobile Personal Video Recorder (PVR) solutions and research on interactive mobile television applications using DVB-H. Furthermore, he is a happy OpenEmbedded (http://oe.handhelds.org) user and small-time contributor.
